The way you carry your bag is sending secret signals

by Abe Chevlen on October 08, 2018

Do you tuck it under your arm or sling it over your shoulder? The way you carry your bag makes a bigger statement than you might expect.

1. The nook
India says: "This is a popular holding position for professional women, especially those who are fashion conscious. The bag is clearly on display and can be seen immediately from most angles.

"If the bag is held like this, it is often at the side of the body, which projects confidence as the front of the body is clear of all barriers. You often see women in the spotlight holding their bags in this way, including the Queen.

"Perhaps it's because they don't actually carry much in them so they're used as more of an accessory that complements the outfit as a whole."

TOP TIP: "In any situation, projecting a confident, upright posture is extremely important. Aim to stand up straight with your shoulders back and you will instantly send the message that you are in control. The trick is to imagine squeezing an orange in-between your shoulder blades – this will help bring your shoulders back and down – projecting a very confident posture. Don't be rigid in your movements – the key is to look relaxed and at ease. Whatever situation, a first date or a job interview, you'll project confidence. "

2. The tuck
India says: "You would usually hold your bag in this way if the style of the bag requires it, like a clutch. But if a woman tucks a bag that has handles under her arm, it sends signals that she's relaxed and not overly concerned with her appearance."

TOP TIP: "The bag should never be gripped too tightly or squeezed against the body as this can send a signal of nerves or insecurity."

3. The dangle
India says: "Aside from this not being the most practical way to hold your handbag, it communicates a sense of insecurity. Holding your bag in front of your body acts as a barrier to the outside world and holding your arm across your body further can send a signal of self-doubt.

"Of course, these signals are contextual and not necessarily true for every woman and every situation. It's only if a woman carries a bag in a certain way habitually, that's when we can draw conclusions on her character."

4. The shoulder
India says: "A woman who doesn't use her bag to hide the front of her body is usually very confident as it ensures the solar plexus is clear of any objects. When you wear your bag over your shoulder, the message you're sending is that you don't feel the need to hide behind anything.

"It's also very practical as the bag is out of your way and leaves both hands free to get on with the task at hand. A large bag also suggests practicality, you have an active life and are prepared for any eventuality, as it can carry an array of items from a laptop to make-up and gym shoes."

5. The grab
India says: "It takes some practice to pull this look off effortlessly. It suggests a woman who cares a lot about the image she is projecting, and suggests one of two personality traits.

"The first is confidence, especially if the bag is held to the side. This helps to display her bag without it obstructing the rest of the outfit.

On the flipside, holding a bag in this way, very close to the body, can act as a comfort 'shield', which can project signals of insecurity and nerves to the outside world – especially if clutched tightly at the base.
